A LEARNERSHIP is a SPONSORSHIP.

A firm (an enterprise, a company) sponsors you so that it pays for your training.  You have to work hard and do the tasks set you.  You must pass at technical college and at a training centre.  Otherwise you lose your sponsorship.

BENEFITS FOR THE FIRM

The firm gains a trainee worker who works for very low rates of pay because he needs the training.

BENEFITS FOR THE LEARNER

As a learner you get a work opportunity which gives you recognised training.  This technical and on-the-job training gives you the lifelong career advancement which most people in South Africa never get.  Once you qualify as an artisan (an electrician, millwright, fitter, turner, etc.) many opportunities arrive.  You can for instance:

1.         Work overseas.

2.         Work on offshore exploration oil rigs (big $).

3.        Teach at a training centre or technical college.

4.         Study further to become an engineer.
