IS A TECHNICAL LEARNERSHIP A BETTER OPPORTUNITY FOR AN INTELLIGENT YOUNG MAN (OR WOMAN) THAN A UNIVERSITY DEGREE?

This is a difficult question which depends on the individual and the particular options presented.  One thing is certain:  If you are offered a technical learnership (a learnership which qualifies you as an electrician, plumber, fitter, turner or other recognised artisan trade), consider it as:

'THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME'

REASON NUMBER ONE:

Learnerships focus on PRACTICAL hands-on can-do training.  You learn to BUILD, make and do things.  This gives you CONFIDENCE and explains why many businesses are owned and run by artisans.  Many university graduates have no confidence in their ability to translate their designs into reality, because they are not trained to do this.  All they can do is do calculations and put the design onto paper.

 REASON NUMBER TWO:

A university degree can be postponed but a learnership cannot.  Sponsors generally want learners between the ages of 18 and 22 years.  After 22 your chances of a learnership decline.  Universities however value the more mature student, particularly the student with technical training and work experience.

 REASON NUMBER THREE:

A student who postpones his university studies to do a technical learnership finds everything easier when he gets to university.  He brings to his theoretical studies the practical knowledge and work experience of his learnership.
